Tuesday morning marked a sorrowful event at Liberty High School in Harrison County, resulting in the tragic passing of a staff member. The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. in the school parking lot, coinciding with the commencement of the day for students and staff.
Harrison County Sheriff Robert Matheny, present at the scene, characterized the collision as a dreadful accident.
He stressed that it was a tragic yet unintentional event. The Sheriff’s Department, which maintains a school resource officer at Liberty High, promptly responded to the situation.
Reports from witnesses suggested that the driver involved in the collision was a student, potentially hindered by the blinding morning sun. However, Sheriff Matheny has not verified the driver’s identity or determined the specific cause of the accident, citing an ongoing investigation.
Subsequent to the collision, the injured staff member was transported by helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital, where regrettably, they were declared deceased. At present, the victim’s identity remains undisclosed.
Sheriff Matheny conveyed the collective grief experienced by both the school and the local community, recognizing the deep sense of loss. He expressed, “Certainly with the school community and our community, we all suffer a loss.
It’s heartbreaking.” This incident serves as a poignant reminder of life’s fragility, evoking contemplation and heartfelt condolences from those impacted by this unfortunate occurrence.
